As the final days of the year settle in, I find myself returning to a single intention: listen.

It has been my word for 2025—my desktop reminder, my wish, my teacher. And while I’ve been doing a lot of listening this year, bringing both clarity and discomfort, it has not translated into many blog posts. Ever hopeful, I’m planning to improve that trend in the coming year. But before the year ends, I wanted to offer a small reflection… a quiet doorway of winter.

Because I truly love this time of year.

Yes, I’m absolutely a sucker for sparkly lights, beautiful wrapping paper, and the soft glow everywhere that seems to make December feel enchanted.

I also love the hush of winter mornings. The darkness lingers. The world wakes slowly. And inside that slowness, there is a pocket of sacred space that feels like a secret gift.

This morning I rose at 5:45. A bit of stretching. A hot cup of coffee beside me. A 10-minute meditation from one of my favorite humans. And a small burst of productivity before the dings and alerts began their daily takeover.

There is something deliciously grounding about a quiet winter morning. The feeling that before the world stirs into chaos, I have a chance to hear myself. If I listen.

A chance to ask:

How am I truly doing?
Did this year unfold the way I hoped?
And what small, meaningful thing can I still pull out of these last few weeks?

(Like, say… one more blog post.)

If your November and December have felt loud, rushed, full, or frayed, consider this a gentle invitation to return to yourself. Here are five simple ways to weave a little inner listening into the busy days ahead:

Wake up just 15 minutes before your house stirs.

I know—it’s cliché advice. But deeply, beautifully true. Those few extra minutes of stillness are worth gold. Sit with a blanket. Sip your tea or coffee. Let the silence greet you before anything else does.

Turn off the noise—just for the length of a short drive.

Whether it’s Spotify, Sirius, or your favorite playlist, give yourself one small commute or errand with no soundtrack at all. Take a few deep breaths. Let your mind settle. The quiet has things to tell you.

Trade one morning coffee break for a meditation break.

Find a comfortable chair, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket, and close your eyes for 10–15 minutes.
And if you fall asleep? That’s not failure—that’s your body whispering a truth you’ve been too busy to hear.
(Note to self: new project for 2026 start a nap up. We’ll all say hello on Zoom, show off our blankets, snuggle, giggle and go to sleep for 20 minutes. I’ll set a timer to wake us)

Give yourself an after-dinner timeout.

Let the family do the dishes. Seriously, let them.
Slip away, apply a facial mask, recline for 15–20 minutes, and simply allow yourself to breathe.
No obligations. No decisions.
If you need sound, choose gentle instrumentals—something that supports you hearing you.

Take a tiny walk in nature (even if it’s just to the mailbox).

Go slowly. Feel your feet on the earth.
Pay attention to the scenery around you. Find one beautiful, ordinary thing—a branch, a breeze, the smell of pine, the crunch of frost—and give thanks for it.
Presence has a way of nudging epiphanies to the surface, even on the shortest walk.

A Whispered Blessing to You

Winter is an invitation… a chance to turn inward.
A reminder that our inner voice is always speaking—oftentimes, we just need enough quiet to hear it.

If this season has been demanding or heavy, may you find more than one pocket of peace to climb into.
If this year stretched you, may you feel your strength, your resolve, your ever-beating heart and be proud of yourself.
If the days ahead feel uncertain, may a few quiet mornings remind you to seek and hear your own wisdom.

There is always enough time to listen.
There is always enough time to return to yourself.

Until the firelight calls you back,
Jeny D.
